JUNE 2018 Extraordinary Woman | Sanae Ferreira
This year LINEA Paolo is celebrating our customers – women just like you by recognizing an Extraordinary Woman each month through our blog and social media channels.
Our June 2018 Extraordinary Woman is Sanae Ferreira – a Nutrition and Metabolism PhD whose focus is on nutrition and how it affects children’s health. Sanae is a native Bostonian who also calls Chicago home.
We sat down with Sanae to learn more about inspiration, work and her personal style.
Tell us about what you love…
- sunshine and smiles
- colors – merlot + gold are all time favorite tops in my book
- my husband, and going on walks and adventures with him
- beautiful packaging, design
- new book smell
- ma po tofu (a spicy tofu stew dish) over rice
- crispy fries with cocktail sauce and horseradish
- homemade ice cream with fresh fruit blended in it
Oh my gosh – love ma po tofu! Such a good list. How would you describe your personal style?
It’s cozy chic. My trademark style an elevated mix of high + low pieces, textures, colors, and movement, aesthetically balanced. I love mixes of geometric patterns with soft layers and outfits that give people something to think about.
What about your favorite color for Spring/Summer 2018?
It’s light bright blue, with white. White shoes are beautiful and elegant for spring!
That’s quite an eclectic mix! Now for a really important question… why do you love shoes?
Shoes are the easiest clothing and accessory item for me to shop for. There’s a history here. Grandparents sometimes spoil their granddaughters. I was the recipient of love by the way of shoes from my grandfather, and since kids’ outgrow shoes quickly, I had to get new shoes more often than other wearable items, and that eventually coincided with my growing sense of style. I began to pay attention to shoe trends more above other items and looked forward to getting shoe catalogues in the mail. As the saying goes, if the shoes fits… Actually, the inspiration for my blog name was a pair of blue boots!
Those must have been some fabulous boots! Tell us about what inspires you…
I collect inspiration from sights, colors, sounds, and words – I lead a poetically inspired life! I am inspired by people who speak up for others with grace and gravity, and use their influence to thoughtfully lend their voice to those who can’t find theirs, or aren’t able to share their message quite yet.
And how do you hope to inspire others?
I hope to especially inspire girls and women like me – women of color, children of immigrants – to be empowered to create their stories while taking time to learn about and honor their heritage, their experiences, and those that inspired them along the way. Consider your heritage: it is singularly beautiful, and no one can live or tell your story the way you can.
Last question – tell us something that most people don’t know about you.
I’m a trained scientist, and earned my Ph.D. this year in Nutrition and Metabolism, where I used nutritional epidemiology (study of causes of disease) to identify areas of risk that we can work on addressing to keep our kids healthy in the long run. I also am a creative: an artist (currently splashing in paint), designer, writer, poet, and illustrator.
My kitchen is my chemistry lab – I mix sauces and spices and blending new flavors is so exciting to me! My recipes are inspired by my heritage: with rich spices from the Middle East, and bright flavors of Chinese cuisine, but also refinement with a French flair (from my time studying abroad). My favorite dishes bring in a mix of comfort and elevated style and I like to feed people and help them to enjoy great food and conversation.
I started my blog in part to keep a record of these mystery ingredients I put in my cooking that I shared with others, and have a way to replicate it later! I believe good food should be shared!
Since then, my adventure blog, Where the BlueBoots Go (bluebootsgo.com), has grown to encompass the array of daily adventures I have, and provide a space to explore places and ideas in the wellness, DIY, culinary, and style spaces. It also has given me a world-class group of talented friends and I’m so grateful for that.
Sanae, thank you so much for sharing your inspiration, work and unique personal style with our readers. We just love how you bring creativity and science into everything you do.
Congratulations on your PhD, and we are just thrilled to have you as our June 2018 Extraordinary Woman!
